The Shopping Spree
PORTLAND, Oregon-
Everyone loves a good shopping spree, but unfortunately, few people will ever actually be a part of one. Shopping sprees are fun and exciting for everyone, but in terms of a shopping spree, there’s probably nothing more gratifying than seeing a child (a shopping basket deep) into a shopping spree of their own.
In Portland there was such a shopping spree, but it wasn’t just for one child, rather many. The school year was about to start, and a caring Fred Meyer retail store was helping local school kids stock up for the school year by having a shopping spree for supplies. As the many children hustled around, escorted by an adult, they frantically grabbed everything they could, with visions of great grades in their futures.
With all the kids scurrying around in a frenzy, grabbing all they could, two men in the store thought they’d use the shopping spree as a distraction and have their own little shopping spree. The men filled up their backpacks with clothes, shoes, tools, and blenders (among other things). The men thought they were being smart in using the frenzy of kids as cover, but what they didn’t realize was the Fred Meyer security team was not even the slightest bit fooled, they were recording their every move on the in-store video surveillance cameras.
But store security decided not to call police on the thieves. They didn’t need to. They had all the police assistance they needed. They whole shopping spree was a planned event based on a ‘Shop With a Cop’ day theme. There were more than 60 uniformed police officers at the location, assisting the children with their sprees.
It was said that at first the men thought it would be a bad day to steal from the store (I’m sure it took a lot of brain power to come to that conclusion) but after some more thought, one of the morons came to the conclusion that the ‘Shop With a Cop’ day would be a good distraction and no one would notice them helping themselves to whatever they desired.
The moral of the story: Once an idiot, always an idiot.
